The Town Basin is the home of Whangarei's latest iconic Landmark THE HUNDERTWASSER ART CENTRE, where you should allow at least tso hours to explore the interior & exterior of the building and book tickets https://www.hundertwasserartcentre.co.nz/book-tickets/ to explore the Hundertwasser Gallery and the Wairau Māori Art Gallery and explore the aforested roof top and gold cupola.
The Putahi Park is also a new space on the waterfront.
The Rolling Ball Clock situated next to the Clapham Clock Museum is another new tourist attraction in the Town Basin.

The Hatea Loop is a 4.2km fully accessible walkway that circles the Hatea River. The walkway links the Town Basin with Te Matau a Pohe and William Fraser Memorial Park on Pohe Island - from which a variety of activities can be enjoyed, including the newly opened Camera Obscura sculpture- the only Camera Obscura in the Southern Hemisphere.
The entire loop is accessible for walking, jogging, pushbikes, all sorts of mobility aids and scooters and is also suitable for push-chairs. Dogs can also be taken but must be on a leash at all times.

The Hatea loop can be accessed from a variety of points. Many chose to start the walk from the Town Basin - although there is also parking adjacent to the Te Matau a Pohe bridge, on Pohe Island, and along Riverside Drive.
